When you’re the Man of Steel, you need the Canine of Steel as a companion. Today, James Gunn revealed on social media our first look at Superman and his loyal canine pal Krypto in the director’s live-action Superman movie that’ll kickoff the DCU next year.
It’s a very sweet image, showing Superman, played by David Corenswet, and Krypto as they enjoy a peaceful moment looking down on Earth from deep space. It shows them taking in a little bit of calm, because we know when they touch ground it’ll be all supervillain chaos again.
In James Gunn’s tweet, he talked about the real-life inspiration for bringing Krypto into the story…
“Krypto arrives on screens in Superman this summer. Krypto was inspired by our dog Ozu, who we adopted shortly after I started writing Superman. Ozu, who came from a hoarding situation in a backyard with 60 other dogs & never knew human beings, was problematic to say the least. He immediately came in & destroyed our home, our shoes, our furniture – he even ate my laptop. It took a long time before he would even let us touch him. I remember thinking, “Gosh, how difficult would life be if Ozu had superpowers?” – and thus Krypto came into the script & changed the shape of the story as Ozu was changing my life. What better time to debut the not-so-good-good-boy Krypto than #AdoptAShelterDog month. Btw, Ozu today, is, fairly often, a very good boy. #Superman”
Interestingly, over in the Supergirl: Woman of Tomorrow movie that’ll come after Superman, that storyline is based on the seminal Tom King comic that features Krypto in a pivotal scene. It suggests there could be some crossover between the two movies, or that Supergirl will change that scene dramatically.
Superman hits theaters on July 11th 2025.
