That we’re getting I Am Legend 2 at all given the years-long wait is still a shock. That it will bring back Will Smith and pair him with Michael B. Jordan is also a surprise but a welcome one, as the duo promises a propulsive sci-fi action sequel…whenever the film arrives, that is. But that is the big question, and Jordan, when asked by People when fans could expect the film to arrive, had no answers. He did provide an update, though.
“We’re still working on the script and getting that up to par,” Jordan said. “It doesn’t have a release date or anything like that. I’m not sure exactly where we’re going to be filming that one, but I’m really excited to get in front of the camera with [Smith]. Being somebody that I’ve looked up to for a really long time, to be able to work with Will is something I’m really looking forward to. I’m really excited.”
Akiva Goldsman will return to produce and write the screenplay, but there’s no director attached at this point. I Am Legend 2 was announced in 2022, around the same time that Smith’s career took a hit when he struck Chris Rock. While some speculated he’d never star in a big movie again, that obviously hasn’t happened as he’s got Bad Boys: Ride or Die opening this weekend.
But Jordan’s comments are disappointing, considering the long wait and lingering questions about the box office potential in a sequel to a movie that hasn’t had great cultural impact. Smith and Jordan have a lot on their plates, too, so factoring in their schedules could make the wait even longer.
