Shot back-to-back and released within months of each other in 2022, X and its prequel follow-up Pearl had fans singing the praises of writer/director Ti West and star Mia Goth, who played multiple roles in the films. She was so good, some thought she should’ve been in the Best Actress race and I agree with them. West has made us wait a while longer for the third and final film in the trilogy, MaXXXine, which takes the action to Hollywood of the 1980s.
Pearl was a prequel that took place that followed a young woman who goes murderously insane while trying to break free from her conservative parents to pursue her dreams of stardom. X took place decades later as a group of young filmmakers attempt to shoot a horror movie, and a young aspiring actress named Maxine encounters a deranged Pearl. Now Maxine’s story continues in the 1980s as she makes her way to Los Angeles to finally achieve her dream of becoming famous.
Once again, West has surrounded Goth was a fun cast that includes Elizabeth Debicki, Moses Sumney, Michelle Monaghan, Bobby Cannavale, Halsey, Lily Collins, Giancarlo Esposito, and Kevin Bacon.
Here’s the synopsis: In 1980s Hollywood, adult film star and aspiring actress Maxine Minx finally gets her big break. But as a mysterious killer stalks the starlets of Hollywood, a trail of blood threatens to reveal her sinister past.
A24 will release MaXXXine into theaters on July 5th.
