The sequel to I Am Legend is a real thing that’s happening. Two years after it was first reported that Warner Bros. was bringing back Will Smith for a follow-up to the hit 2007 sci-fi film, the actor has confirmed his previously-reported co-star, as well as providing a status on where I Am Legend 2 currently stands.
Smith spoke openly about I Am Legend 2 while attending the Red Sea International Film Festival in Saudi Arabia. According to ScreenDaily, Smith admitted he’ll be sharing the screen with Michael B. Jordan, and that a script has just recently been completed.
”I have a call with Michael B. Jordan tomorrow. The script just came in… I’m probably giving away too much information…” admitted Smith. ”We’re going with the mythology of the DVD version where my character lived. I can’t tell you any more but Michael B. Jordan is in and we’re doing it.”
So what, they’re just going to pretend that millions of people didn’t see the theatrical version of I Am Legend? The one where his character, Robert Neville, dies at the end? Apparently so. It has been the point from the very beginning to use the alternate ending provided on the home release, in which Neville is alive and well, and humanity is left to co-exist with a new species of mutants.
To be fair, this version of the story is more faithful to author Robert Matheson book. Still, I hope they at least try to come up with an explanation.
At any rate, this sounds very early in the process and it may be a while before we see I Am Legend 2 in theaters. But you have to like the combo of Will Smith and Michael B. Jordan as a positive place to start from, and it’ll be interesting to see who is found to direct.
