Fish out of water movies are amazing aren’t they? When I say that I don’t mean those low key, “person adjusts to life in a different school, country, job” types no, I’m talking about the big boys, the King Ralph‘s of the world (for those that don’t know, it’s a John Goodman classic, look it up), where the fish is not just out of water but in a position of immense power from nothingness. Enter Mafia Mamma which sees Toni Collette travel to Italy to bury her Grandfather only to find out that he was actually head of the Mafia, a role which she now inherits.
The trailer had me interested from the studio logo, Bleecker Street, in this case. They are a serious quality studio and I’m struggling to remember a time that I was disappointed by something they put out. Now that being said, from the footage given, this looks to be more of an intellectual comedy, or at least a contextual comedy for which a lot of the context wasn’t given. Outside of the obvious jokes, like where she brings up her cheating husband prompting two wise guys to ask if they should take him out, there wasn’t much that popped out at me. BUT, there is one bright shining light that’s pushed me back in to the ‘Anticipating’ column for this one, Monica Bellucci.
