True crime is all the rage right now, whether it be in podcast form, on the big screen, or in prestige television. Boston Strangler revisits one of the most infamous serial killers ever, and the investigation, led by two female reporters, that brought him down.
Keira Knightley and Carrie Coon lead the film’s ensemble, playing newspaper reporters Loretta McLaughlin and Jean Cole, respectively. It’s McLaughlin who is the first to connect the Boston Strangler’s murders, but she was repeatedly stymied by the sexism of the era, even as the killer’s body count rises.
The film is written and directed by Matt Ruskin. Chris Cooper, David Dastmalchian, Alessandro Nivola, Morgan Spector, Bill Camp, and Robert John Burke co-star.
Boston Strangler hits Hulu on March 17th.
The film follows Loretta McLaughlin (Keira Knightley), a reporter for the Record-American newspaper, who becomes the first journalist to connect the Boston Strangler murders. As the mysterious killer claims more and more victims, Loretta attempts to continue her investigation alongside colleague and confidante Jean Cole (Carrie Coon), yet the duo finds themselves stymied by the rampant sexism of the era. Nevertheless, McLaughlin and Cole bravely pursue the story at great personal risk, putting their own lives on the line in their quest to uncover the truth.
