Call it an Infinite Crisis if you like, but the recent shake-ups at DC Studios, led by co-chiefs James Gunn and Peter Safran, have left a lot of questions unanswered. Gunn has admitted that things are still early and mostly in flux, but based on his comments, and news of Wonder Woman 3‘s cancellation and possible recasting of Jason Momoa as Lobo, suggest that a total reset is happening. And that probably doesn’t bode well for Black Adam, which has struggled to find an audience.
Nobody has been a bigger Black Adam cheerleader than its star, Dwayne Johnson. Having promised for years that his superhero film would “change the hierarchy of power” in the DCU and launch a new franchise, the $385M worldwide box office says otherwise. There’s some question whether the film will lose Warner Bros. Discovery loads of money, or turn a modest profit. But either way, hopes for a sequel appear to be dim according to THR‘s report, which puts some of the blame at Johnson’s feet for his public campaign to get Henry Cavill back as Superman. It seems that some within WB don’t like Johnson throwing his weight around.
Don’t tell that to Johnson, though. In a Twitter exchange with a fan, Johnson called the grim speculation about Black Adam and future DC Studios plans a bunch of “noise”…
That’s it brotha, you already know.
It’s all noise ???— Dwayne Johnson (@TheRock) December 8, 2022
I find it hard to believe that Gunn and Safran would throw away any goodwill they might have with Johnson, but then again I never thought they’d do away with Wonder Woman 3, either. Clearly, something massive is afoot, and Gunn has already promised that some fans will not be happy with the choices they make. Will Johnson be happy when all is finally revealed? Time will tell.
