My first reaction on seeing that Shotgun Wedding a new rom-com was on it’s way featuring Josh Duhamel and Jennifer Lopez was to check the calendar and make sure it wasn’t 2009. My second reaction? Giving JLo a TON of credit because, damn it, the woman hasn’t lost a step in all of her 50+ years. THEN, I watched the trailer. I didn’t think a Rom-Com-Action movie was a thing that was possible but here we are and to be honest, the results are enticing. Lopez and Duhamel play a couple about to have a destination wedding. All of the standard cliches are in place when, BOOM, day of the wedding the whole thing is taken over by pirates and the couple has to go full John McClain.
This is a textbook example of “So crazy it might just work”. Like I said at the jump, JLo’s still got it, and I don’t just mean the looks (though those are DEFINITELY still there). She’s still so unbelievably charming and dare I say, funny. Duhamel has been a solid go-to second lead for about 15 years and while I’ve always thought he should have a bigger name I can’t argue with the results of him in that tier 2 spot. There are some real Romancing the Stone vibes here and I’m not embarrassed to say I’m looking forward to seeing how this turns out.
Official Synopsis:
(Jennifer Lopez) and Tom (Josh Duhamel) gather their lovable but very opinionated families for the ultimate destination wedding, just as the couple begin to get cold feet. And if that wasn’t enough of a threat to the celebration, suddenly everyone’s lives are in danger when the entire party is taken hostage. “’Til Death Do Us Part” takes on a whole new meaning in this hilarious, adrenaline-fueled adventure as Darcy and Tom must save their loved ones—if they don’t kill each other first.
