Thank goodness there are filmmakers like Nora Twomey around to offer something different to the animated movies from Disney and Pixar. Twomey is the acclaimed director behind The Breadwinner, The Secret of Kels, and even had a hand in other acclaimed Cartoon Saloon projects The Song of the Sea and Wolfwalkers. There are A LOT of Oscar nominations in that group, and now Twomey is back with My Father’s Dragon, and we should probably reserve her spot at the Academy Awards right now.
Based on the 1948 children’s novel and adapted by Meg LeFauve (Inside Out), My Father’s Dragon centers on a young boy named Elmer Elevator who runs away from his new home in the city to a place called Wild Island to search for a missing dragon.
Jacob Tremblay, Gaten Matarazzo, Golshifteh Farahani, Dianne Wiest, Rita Moreno, Chris O’Dowd, Judy Greer, Alan Cumming, Yara Shahidi, Jackie Earle Haley, Mary Kay Place, Leighton Meester, Spence Moore II, Adam Brody, Charlyne Yi, Maggie Lincoln, Jack Smith, Whoopi Goldberg, and Ian McShane are part of the huge voice cast.
As you can see, the gorgeous animation style is similar to Cartoon Saloon’s previous films, capturing a storybook fantasy quality without sacrificing detail.
