“The world has a way of changing, but there’s always one thing that stays the same.”
So what might that be, Dominic Toretto? Certainly, it’s not the release date for F9, the ninth chapter in the epic Fast and the Furious franchise, which was among the first heavyweight blockbusters to move because of the pandemic. Originally scheduled to open last May (!!!), it was pushed to April 2021, only for Universal to then shift into another gear and settle on May 28th 2021, the better to keep away from No Time to Die.
You can’t have the biggest game of the year without a Big Game spot for F9, and the footage shows Vin Diesel, Michelle Rodriguez, Ludacris, the returning Sung Kang, and even Helen Mirren putting their pedals to the metal, in the streets and in the jungles and shit. It’s pretty ridiculous. We also get a look at John Cena who plays villain Jakob Toretto, and you know he’s badass because he spells his name with a “k” rather than a “c” like a normal person.
While the arrival of Dom and Mia’s long-lost bro will cause some family tension, does anybody expect him to stay a heel by the movie’s end? Me neither.
Justin Lin is back behind the camera for F9 which opens on May 28th.
