‘Landscape With Invisible Hand’: Tiffany Haddish To Star In Sci-Fi Film From ‘Bad Education’ Director

Since her breakout role in Girls Trip, Tiffany Haddish has kept busy, but not just with loads of comedy films and TV episodes. She’s also branched out into drama, like in the crime film The Kitchen, and now she’s taking on a new challenge: sci-fi.

Deadline reports Haddish is in final talks to star in Landscape with Invisible Hand, an adaptation of M.T. Anderson’s sci-fi novel. On board to write and direct is Cory Finley, who recently helmed HBO’s acclaimed film Bad Education.  The film is being set up at MGM, after being acquired by producers at Plan B and Annapurna.

Described as in the same vein as The Truman Show and District 9, the story depicts “a near future in which an alien species known as the Vuvv has taken over Earth. After the Vuvv’s labor-saving technology causes Earth’s job market and global economy to collapse, a teenager and his girlfriend cook up a way to make much-needed money by broadcasting their dating life to the fascinated aliens. Unfortunately, things go badly when, over time, the two teens come to hate each other and can’t break up without bankrupting their families.”

That’s a pretty wild premise, and doesn’t immediately set forth a clear role for Haddish. Perhaps she’s one of the aliens?

I still haven’t seen Bad Education (I know I know!!) but Finley’s debut, Thoroughbreds, was one of my favorite films of that year. There’s a similarity in all three of his projects with a focus on teen characters, so while this is still out of his comfort zone it’s not too far out there.
