Pretty soon, every actor you know and love, the one you think would never ever do a superhero movie, is going to join the Marvel Cinematic Universe. It’ll just happen. The latest addition to the MCU is only a surprise because his last tangle with the genre turned out pretty shitty. Oscar Isaac has joined the cast of Marvel’s upcoming Moon Knight series, and yep, he’s taking on the title role.
Deadline reports Isaac will play assassin/crackpot Marc Spector aka Moon Knight in Marvel’s Disney+ series. Moon Knight has often been compared, rather unfavorably, to Batman; I guess because they’re both “heroes of the night”. But Spector is…well, he’s weird, and Marvel has never been good at defining his character. He’s an assassin, who is also blessed by the Egyptian moon god Khonshu, who resurrected him and gave him superhuman powers. Did I mention he also suffers from multiple personality disorder? A lot going on with this guy.
The series has The Umbrella Academy‘s Jeremy Slater on board to develop and write, but it’s unclear how far his association goes beyond that.
Isaac’s previous run-in with a Marvel movie was in Fox’s X-Men: Apocalypse, the film that began the franchise’s severe quality slump at the end. Isaac wasn’t particularly good in it, either. Disney knows what to expect from Isaac after a trio of Star Wars films, and he’s simply one of the best actors around and a fan-favorite. He’ll be seen next in Denis Villeneuve’s Dune.
Moon Knight is still a ways off and probably won’t arrive until 2022 at the earliest.
