James Gunn And John Cena To Reunite For ‘The Suicide Squad’ Spinoff Series ‘Peacemaker’

How pumped are Warner Bros. for what James Gunn has brought to The Suicide Squad? So much, they’re already giving him a spinoff HBO Max series, and it’ll be led by one of the newest castmembers, John Cena as Peacemaker.

HBO Max has announced an 8-episode Peacemaker series, with John Cena set to reprise his role from The Suicide Squad. Gunn, who has his feet in both DC and Marvel, will return to the Distinguished Competition to write the entire series and direct multiple episodes.

Peacemaker is sorta what I call the DC Universe version of Marvel’s USAgent. He’s a guy who believes in peace and freedom so much that he’ll kill anybody and everybody to achieve it. A series based on him should be very interesting right now, and Gunn plans on tackling the real-world issues such a character would cause.

“‘Peacemaker’ is an opportunity to delve into current world issues through the lens of this superhero/supervillain/and world’s biggest douchebag,” said Gunn. “I’m excited to expand ‘The Suicide Squad’ and bring this character from the DC film universe to the full breadth of a series. And of course, to be able to work again with John, Peter, and my friends at Warner Bros. is the icing on the cake.”

John Cena added, “I have said before that it has been a tremendous honor and an incredible opportunity to be part of ‘The Suicide Squad’ and to work with James on what is going to be a fantastic movie. I am unbelievably excited to have the chance to team up with him again for ‘Peacemaker.’ We can’t wait for fans to see this.”

Filming on Peacemaker will begin in early 2021 before Gunn returns to Marvel for Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3. The Suicide Squad opens August 6th 2021, and don’t be surprised if Peacemaker is right behind it.
