With Tenet‘s box office doing so poorly that Warner Bros. is actively hiding the numbers, other studios are seeing that…well, maybe now isn’t such a good time to put another major release out there. Wonder Woman 1984 skedaddled to Christmas, and now the film that would’ve been the next big debut, Nia DaCosta and Jordan Peele’s Candyman, has vacated its spot.
Variety reports that MGM and Universal have moved Candyman off of its October 26th date and into 2021. The film, which is directed by DaCosta and produced by Peele, was originally to open in June, but has bounced to September and then October due to the lingering shutdown of movie theaters.
Here is what DaCosta had to say about the decision:
We wanted the horror and humanity of CANDYMAN to be experienced in a collective, a community, so we’re pushing Candyman to next year, to ensure that everyone can see the film, in theaters, and share in that experience.

This leaves the next major “blockbuster” release as Kenneth Branagh’s sequel Death On the Nile, which opens October 23rd. This is a Disney/Fox release and given the lukewarm returns on Mulan, it’ll be very interesting to see what they decide to do. I feel like the decision they make here will also say a lot about their plans for Black Widow. Stay tuned.
