Grief, desire, and secrets are at the center of Andrew Haigh’s latest drama, A Long Winter, themes he previously took in 2023’s acclaimed All of Us Strangers. Starring Fred Hechinger, Belfast‘s Caitríona Balfe, and The Bear‘s Ebon Moss-Bachrach, the film premiered at Telluride before moving to NYFF. It’s adapted from Colm Tóibín’s short story about a broken family and a vanished loved one.
SYNOPSIS: In 1951, high in Colorado’s Rocky Mountains, Mike’s (Hechinger) world is thrown into uncertainty when his mother vanishes into the wilderness. Alongside his complicated father, and with their small mountain community rallying together against the unforgiving winter, Mike embarks on a search that leads him toward an unexpected journey of self-discovery, belonging and the quiet strength required to carry on.
Also in the cast are Kit Connor, D’Pharaoh Woon-A-Tai, Martin Freeman, and Manuel Garcia-Rulfo. Connor and Woon-A-Tai are reunited after playing combat soldiers in Alex Garland’s Warfare.
A Long Winter hits New York theaters on December 4th. MUBI will give it a wider rollout on January 22nd 2027.
