After a history-making $168M opening day, Spider-Man: Brand New Day (review) just barely missed out on the biggest opening weekend in U.S. history. Marvel Studios’ fourth Spidey movie with Tom Holland earned an incredible $355M, just $2M shy of the record set by Avengers: Endgame in 2019. It’s the best debut ever in Sony Pictures’ history, and things are only just getting started.
Mind you, this is without international numbers, which are expected to be the biggest four-day total of all-time. It’s quite the achievement for director Destin Daniel Cretton, plus his cast of Holland, Zendaya, Jacob Batalon, Sadie Sink, Mark Ruffalo, and Jon Bernthal. Brand New Day did manage to break Endgame‘s preview night record with a huge $72M Thursday.
Mavel’s Kevin Feige said, “This is a truly phenomenal opening, and we are grateful to audiences everywhere for coming out and experiencing our film the way it was meant to be seen. This debut reflects the enduring power of Marvel’s characters, and the connection they continue to have with fans around the world—and, as audiences saw, it sets up exciting things to come.”
Spider-Man: No Way Home hit $1.92B in 2021. There’s a good shot that Brand New Day will cross $2B, as both Endgame and Avengers: Infinity War did.
Continuing on, Christopher Nolan’s The Odyssey, which also stars Holland and Zendaya, fell to #2 with another $51M and a slight 43% drop in its third week. The mythological epic has $395M domestically.
Bravely going against Spider-Man: Brand New Day in an attempt at counterprogramming, Gregg Araki’s raunchy comedy I Want Your Sex (review) opened in 670 theaters by Magnolia Pictures. The Olivia Wilde/Cooper Hoffman film about a timid guy who becomes a provocative artist’s sexual muse earned just $600K for a weak $857 per site average.
