With great power, comes great box office.
For more than a decade, Star Wars: The Force Awakens held the crown as the highest-grossing movie in America with $936.6M. Today, that record came crashing down, as Spider-Man: Brand New Day surpassed it with $936.7M, earned over just 47 days. This is all unadjusted for inflation, of course.
Still, it’s an incredible achievement. The fourth Spider-Man movie led by Tom Holland opened to a record-breaking $360M, one of many records it would break along the way.
Worldwide, the film has $2.45B and is behind only Avatar and Avengers: Endgame for the all-time crown. It surpassed $1B globally in under a week.
So what accounts for this remarkable success? The Spider-Man movies have always been popular. Spider-Man: Far from Home and Spider-Man: No Way Home both surpassed the $1B mark. One thing that’s different now is the popularity of Holland and Zendaya, who are having a year for the record books themselves. Holland also stars in Christopher Nolan’s The Odyssey, while Zendaya features in that film as well as The Drama and Dune: Part Three.
