Just yesterday with the release of the Avengers: Doomsday trailer, I mentioned that this run-up to San Diego Comic-Con felt like Marvel going back to basics. Release a huge, game-changing trailer that will have fans buzzing through the rest of the year. Today’s drop of the final Spider-Man: Brand New Day trailer also feels like the kind of move Kevin Feige would do. It’s a nostalgic piece that serves to remind us how deeply connected we are to Tom Holland’s Spider-Man, and just how connected Spider-Man is to the MCU that we have followed for so long.
The first half serves as a walk down memory lane, as Peter Parker (Tom Holland) becomes Spider-Man while also becoming best friends with MJ (Zendaya), and Ned (Jacob Batalon). They would come to mean a lot more than that to him, but he gave it all up, erasing the world’s memory of him, in order to save it from destruction. Now he operates as a superhero full-time in a world that has no idea who he is. I’m still unable to figure out why Peter tortures himself by staying in their lives when he probably should’ve moved across town.
That said, it’s seeing those friends move on without him that has unleashed something within Spider-Man, and it could be what is needed to defeat a new threat who can become anybody. Sounds like the Chameleon, but who can say? Maybe it’s Sadie Sink’s mysterious character? Maybe she’s the MCU version of Mystique?
Directed by Destin Daniel Cretton, the film also stars Mark Ruffalo, Jon Bernthal, Michael Mando, Marvin Jones III, Liza Colón-Zayas, Tramell Tillman, and Florence Pugh who is expected to appear as Black Widow.
Spider-Man: Brand New Day swings into theaters on July 31st.
