Sometimes, you go out on a blind date hoping for a hookup, and what you get is a stolen car, a dead body, and a bag of cash. That’s what happens to Severance actor Zach Cherry and Oscar-nominee Maria Bakalova in All Night Wrong, a two-hander comedy arriving in August from Voltage Pictures.
The film is directed by Jason James from a script by Jason Filiatrault. Also in the cast are Emily Hampshire and Tyler Labine. James and Filiatrault previously worked together on the 2017 Thomas Middleditch rom-com Entanglement.
Cherry has long been one of those “I know that guy” supporting actors, quietly stealing scenes from bigger stars. He’s really come into his own on Severance, and it’s good to see him getting another shot in the spotlight. Bakalova has proven how funny she can be in Borat Subsequent Moviefilm, but has mostly leaned into drama of late in The Apprentice, Dirty Angels, and more.
SYNOPSIS: Gary (Cherry) and Ell (Bakalova) expect a straightforward hookup after meeting online – instead, they get a suspicious motel clerk, a stolen car, a backpack full of cash, and a body. Too compromised to call police, the two decide to handle it themselves. But the body won’t stay dead, and a cryptic plea sends them chasing a trail of blackmail, betrayal, and lost love before the night’s true villain is revealed. Equal parts dark comedy and crime thriller, it’s the worst and best first date imaginable.
All Night Wrong premiered earlier this year at SXSW London. It will open in select theaters and digitally on August 14th.
