Polish filmmaker Agnieszka Smoczyńska last directed 2022’s The Silent Twins (review here), which, despite my reservations, deserved more attention than it got for the compelling true story at its core. Now Smoczyńska is back with Hot Spot, a sci-fi thriller starring Noomi Rapace that hopefully won’t fly under the radar.
Rapace is joined in the cast by Smoczyńska’s husband, Andrzej Konopka, and Drive My Car actress Reika Kirishima in the murder mystery set in a future dominated by sentient AI.
Here’s the synopsis: In Hot Spot, set in a near future society ruled by sentient A.I., a private eye investigates a murder case only to discover a rebel group capable of undermining the digital overlord. As the detective’s identity slowly unravels, his world enters a state of hypnotic meltdown.
Smoczyńska directs from a script by Robert Bolesto.
Look, you had me at Noomi Rapace. A longtime favorite since The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo, Rapace is an actress I’ve only had occasion to interview once. Hopefully, that will change with this film.
Focus Features will release Hot Spot in theaters on August 21st.
