The Duffer Brothers, creators of Netflix’s hit Stranger Things franchise, recently inked a major deal with Paramount Pictures, which will put their feature film projects into theaters. Obviously, that’s not something Netflix typically does. Now we’re learning that the first of the Duffers’ “event” films will open nationwide on November 3rd 2028.
Details on the Duffers’ film are unknown, including a title, plot, and casting. What we do know is that they will direct from their own script. It’s likely that we’ll start hearing more news soon.
The Duffers had built themselves quite a home at Netflix. Stranger Things recently ended its successful run after five seasons, becoming one of the network’s most-watched shows. They also produced the animated spinoff Stranger Things: Tales from ’85, and the shows Something Very Bad is Going to Happen and The Boroughs.
That said, the deal with Paramount covers streaming and theatrical releases, which was too good to pass up.
What remains unclear is how the Duffers will do outside of the relative safety of Stranger Things. The only film they ever directed was 2015’s Hidden starring Alexander Skarsgard and Andrea Riseborough. Few saw it, and it didn’t make much of an impression. They’re about to leap into a much bigger stage where even more eyes will be on their success or failure. [Variety]
