Sony, the studio that years ago suffered the most devastating leak of hacked information in Hollywood history, also can’t keep its Spider-Man: Brand New Day trailers from leaking. The first one hit the Internet before it was released, and so did this second one, which dropped early in nearly perfect, crystal clear form days ago. Today, the footage officially lands online, giving us a much clearer look at Peter Parker’s first adventure as a total enigma.
What’s interesting about this trailer is how much it seems to be teasing the arrival of the X-Men to the MCU. Or at least, that’s how I read it. First of all, Spidey is undergoing major physical transformations, and goes to speak with Mark Ruffalo’s Bruce Banner about “supressing mutated DNA”, which sounds like some X-Men shit.
Also, there’s an unknown villain, rumored to be played by Sadie Sink, appears to have telepathic and telekinetic abilities, although they don’t affect Spidey. Those powers suggest Jean Grey aka Phoenix, the role many have long suspected for Sink. But if that’s the case, why is she a baddie? My guess is that she doesn’t have full control of her powers, and that the actions she’s taking aren’t intentional. This would be a nice segue to her joining the X-Men at the insistence of a bald dude in a hover chair.

We also see the return of the Savage Hulk, so no more Smart Hulk as we’ve seen over the last couple of years. Also, Peter Parker just can’t stay away from Ned and MJ, even taking her out for a swing at one point. Finally, Jon Bernthal is back as Frank Castle aka The Punisher, and he looks to have a pretty big role.
Directed by Destin Daniel Cretton, Spider-Man: Brand New Day hits theaters on July 31st!
