I don’t know if anyone could’ve predicted the phenomenal success of Backrooms. Director Kane Parsons was just 17-years-old when A24 set him to direct a big screen version of his online viral horror, and now it’s the #1 movie in the country. While a sequel is already in the works, Parsons is reportedly planning yet another genre entry, this time teaming up with Longlegs director Osgood Perkins.
The news comes from scooper Jeff Sneider, and while it should be taken with a grain of salt, it does make some sense. Perkins, who produced Backrooms along with Shawn Levy and James Wan, was instrumental in that film’s development. He worked closely with Parsons, mentoring the young filmmaker along the way. There were even rumors that Perkins shadow-directed Backrooms, but that isn’t true.
This new project with Parsons and Perkins would be an original, but the details are a mystery. It’s also unknown what role Perkins would play, but Parsons is expected to direct. Perhaps Perkins is producing once again, or maybe he’ll help co-write the screenplay.
There isn’t a word on a distributor, either, although NEON or A24 seem like obvious destinations. NEON is set to release Perkins’ upcoming horror, The Young People, later this year.
