The response to the new Scary Movie 6 trailer must’ve been better than Paramount expected, because it has just moved up the horror parody one week. Once scheduled to open on June 12th, the film will now hit theaters on June 5th.
On that date, Scary Movie 6 will go head-to-head with Amazon/MGM’s Masters of the Universe, which isn’t great news for that long-gestating $200M film. Despite what I thought was a solid trailer, Amazon’s He-Man flick just isn’t generating a lot of buzz, and Paramount has decided to pounce.
There’s a good chance that Scary Movie 6, riding a wave of Scream 7‘s success and the return of the Wayans Bros., will be the #1 movie that week. Footage has promised jokes about some pretty big movies, including Sinners and Weapons. On the other hand, He-Man is a brand that was popular in the ’80s, when the first live-action movie opened. There hasn’t been a lot of fan clamor for a new one, which is part of the reason it’s taken so long. And if Masters of the Universe flops, fans can expect to wait just as long for another.
