James Cameron Says ‘Avatar 4’ Is “Very Likely” Despite Box Office Stumble

James Cameron’s Avatar: Fire & Ash has grossed over $1.4B at the box office, so far. Believe it or not, some reports state the film has yet to turn a profit due to the high production and marketing costs. That’s also considerably less than Avatar: The Way of Water‘s $2.3B in 2022. Cameron warned that a fourth movie might not happen if Disney doesn’t see the results.

Over the weekend at the Saturn Awards, Cameron gave Avatar fans some reason for hope. In a comment captured by ScreenRant, Cameron said Avatar 4 is “very likely” to happen. Not only that, but he’s heard the audience feedback and is taking it into consideration.

I really hope that’s true on the last part, because my chief complaint with Fire & Ash is that it was basically telling the same story as The Way of Water. Something needs to change, and fast.

Now might be a good time for that change to happen. Disney is in transition mode, too, with new CEO Josh D’Amaro. Two more Avatar movies are on the table, set for 2029 and 2031. Still, nothing is confirmed until Disney says it is. Oscar winner Michelle Yeoh has already shot some stuff for her debut in the franchise, which is expected to be in the fourth movie.

Meanwhile, Cameron is 71 years old and has a lot on his plate already with his WWII film Ghosts of Hiroshima, a seventh Terminator movie, and a possible Alita: Battle Angel sequel. He might want to pursue those projects while he still can. I hear James Wan is up for taking over Avatar if Cameron needs a break.
