A very familiar sounding movies is in the works from directors Shari Springer Berman and Robert Pulcini, and it will star Jessica Chastain and Chris Pine.
Variety reports Chastain and Pine will star in This is Pleasure, a #MeToo drama directed by Berman and Pulcini. The story is based on Mary Gaitskill’s novel, and centers on Margot (Chastain) whose closest friend (Pine) is hit with misconduct allegations, forcing her to choose between loyalty, forgiveness, or the truth. Nina Raine adapted the screenplay.
This is almost exactly the plot of Luca Guadagnino’s After the Hunt, which died when it was released by Amazon MGM a few months back. Call me crazy, but I think the well has run dry on cryptic #MeToo morality tales.
Berman and Pulcini are best known for their terrific 2003 biography, American Splendor, which holds up as one of the best comic book adaptations ever made. Their output has been lackluster since, with films such as The Nanny Diaries, The Extra Man, and Girl Most Likely. The HBO film Cinema Verite is pretty good, though.
Chastain recently reunited with director Michel Franco for Dreams, and next has Rob Savage’s horror film, Other Mommy. The world premiere of Pine’s latest film, Carousel, was held at the Sundance Film Festival just days ago.
