It’s tough to make a sci-fi blockbuster nowadays, but you know what? Audiences still love to see a person stranded in deep space, fighting to complete a mission that will give them a chance to return home. Films such as The Martian and Gravity follow that theme and they were both huge. And the hope is that Project Hail Mary, which happens to be from The Martian author Andy Weir, will follow in their footsteps.
A new trailer for Project Hail Mary dropped during the Super Bowl, showcasing star Ryan Gosling as science teacher-turned-astronaut Ryland Grace, charged with jumpstarting the sun and saving humanity. Sounds easy, right? It doesn’t help that he has no memory of why he’s there.
This is the first movie since 2014’s 22 Jump Street to be directed by Phil Lord and Chris Miller. The Martian screenwriter Drew Goddard returns to pen the screenplay.
Gosling is joined in the cast by Sandra Hüller, Milana Vayntrub, Lionel Boyce, and Ken Leung.
SYNOPSIS: Science teacher Ryland Grace (Ryan Gosling) wakes up on a spaceship light years from home with no recollection of who he is or how he got there. As his memory returns, he begins to uncover his mission: solve the riddle of the mysterious substance causing the sun to die out. He must call on his scientific knowledge and unorthodox ideas to save everything on Earth from extinction… but an unexpected friendship means he may not have to do it alone.
The trailers for this keep getting better, capturing the edge-of-your-seat thrills, humor, and puzzling mysteries that make Weir’s book such a page-turner. I wouldn’t have spoiled so much of the story, but if it gets people to pay for a ticket, then so be it.
Amazon MGM Studios will release Project Hail Mary in theaters on March 20th 2026.
