Faces of Death. If you know it, you might’ve been a kid who grew up believing the many deaths depicted in the 1978 horror sensation were real. I know I did, when the film hit VHS and we kids sneakily watched it when our parents weren’t around. A few years ago, Legendary set in motion a Faces of Death remake from Cam and How to Blow Up a Pipeline filmmakers Isa Mazzei and Daniel Goldhaber, and two years after it completed shooting it finally has a full trailer. Get ready to get grossed out!
Barbie Ferreira and Dacre Montgomery star in this updated take on Faces of Death, which was given a hard R rating by the MPA for its “strong bloody violence, gore, sexual content, nudity, language, and drug use.” Um, yes please! Seriously, if it didn’t have all of those things, then I think horror fans would have rebelled.
Ferreira plays a content moderator on a YouTube-like video platform, who discovers a group that appears to be reenacting murders from the original movie.
Also in the cast are Josie Totah, Jermaine Fowler, and Charli XCX who is in everything right now. Goldhaber directs from a script co-written with Mazzei.
I dig the low-fi look that Goldhaber has brought to all of his films so far. It really accentuates what promises to be an incredibly grisly movie, one that could have people throwing up in the aisles. Let’s hope so.
SYNOPSIS: In FACES OF DEATH, the exploration of the original film’s infamous “is it real or not?” conceit continues as a woman (Ferreira) working as a content moderator for a major video platform discovers what appears to be re-enactments of murders from the original film. In an online world where nothing can be trusted, she must determine whether the violence is fiction, or unfolding in real time.
IFC will release Faces of Death in theaters on April 10th.
