It’s official! Brendan Fraser and Rachel Weisz are coming back to revive Universal’s The Mummy franchise, in a new film directed by Radio Silence. And now today, that film has a release date of May 19th 2028.
That date makes sense. 1999’s The Mummy and 2001’s The Mummy Returns both opened in May and earned over $400M each. The third film, 2008’s Tomb of the Dragon Emperor, made a similar amount but was a critical flop. It opened in August.
The new film, penned by David Coggeshall (The Family Plan), will ignore the events of Tomb of the Dragon Emperor, which had swapped out Weisz for Maria Bello.
Matt Bettinelli-Olpin and Tyler Gillett, the duo known as Radio Silence, are best known for their work in the horror genre, including Ready or Not and the upcoming sequel, plus the vampire flick Abigail and two successful Scream movies.
