Universal’s live-action How to Train Your Dragon took everyone by surprise last year, not only for being really good, but also for clearing $636M at the box office. Only one actor returned to reprise their animated role and that was Gerard Butler as Stoick the Vast. For the upcoming sequel, he won’t be alone and will be joined by two-time Oscar winner Cate Blanchett.
THR reports Blanchett will reprise her role as Viking warrior Valka from 2014’s How to Train Your Dragon 2. Valka is Stoick’s long-lost wife and mother to Hiccup. Valka is a dragon rescuer, which puts her and the family at odds with the villainous Drago Bludvist, who plans to dominate the world by using dragons.
I’d like to see Djimon Hounsou return to play Bludvist. Seems he’d be great bringing that character to life once again.
Mason Thames, Nico Parker, Gerard Butler, Julian Dennison, Gabriel Howell, Bronwyn James and Harry Trevaldwyn are all coming back for the sequel. As will writer/director Dean DeBlois, who has shepherded this franchise from the very beginning in 2010.
How to Train Your Dragon 2 opens on June 11th, 2027.
