Undoubtedly, you’ve been hearing more about Sirāt as the awards season has rolled along. That’s for good reason. Oliver Laxe’s Cannes Jury Prize winner has been a standout among multiple critics groups, with the Moroccan survival thriller also shortlisted for five Academy Award categories.
Set in a surprisingly volatile Moroccan rave scene, Sirāt follows a father and son on a perilous desert journey to find their missing daughter and sister. The film stars Sergi López, Bruno Núñez Arjona, Stefania Gadda, Joshua Liam Herderson, Richard Bigui Bellamy, Tonin Janvier, and Jade Oukid.
SYNOPSIS: A father (Sergi López) and his son arrive at a rave deep in the mountains of southern Morocco. They are searching for Mar — daughter and sister — who vanished months ago at one of these endless, sleepless parties. Surrounded by electronic music and a raw, unfamiliar sense of freedom, they hand out her photo again and again. Hope is fading, but they push through and follow a group of ravers heading to one last party in the desert. As they venture deeper into the burning wilderness, the journey forces them to confront their own limits.
You know Sirāt is a big deal because NEON got a hold of it, with plans to release it in NY and LA on February 6th, with a wider rollout to follow. Its track record with Best Picture winners Parasite and Anora makes this a film with a genuine shot to do the same.
