‘Gaston’: Disney Moves Forward With Live-Action ‘Beauty And The Beast’ Movie From ‘Shang-Chi’ Writer

Back in 2021, when Disney was trying to dominate the streaming wars during the pandemic, it had come up with the genius idea of a Beauty and the Beast prequel series centered on Gaston, the ridiculously good-looking, self-centered villain of the story. He was played by Luke Evans in the 2017 live-action remake, and was expected to reprise the role. Well, scrap that, because now the idea is an all-new movie with an all-new cast.

Deadline reports that a new Gaston live-action movie is in the works, with a “swashbuckling” script by Shang-Chi writer Dave Callaham. Kate Herron and Briony Redman wrote an earlier draft.

Gaston isn’t likely to stay a villain for long in this new film, as Disney continues to reform its baddies as it did Maleficent and Cruella. Debuting in the 1991 animated classic, Gaston was a fearsome, handsome hunter who became obsessed with Belle, putting him at odds with the Beast.

This is early enough along that a director has yet to be attached. A new actor will be cast to play Gaston, which likely means someone to play his loyal sidekick, LeFou.
