So, How to Make a Killing has been in the news a bit this month. First of all, the trailer for director John Patton Ford’s follow-up to Emily the Criminal (which was great!!) has been playing in theaters for a while, attached to screenings of The Running Man. This was unfortunate because both movies star Glen Powell, and that one tanked badly at the box office and stirred up talk that he’s not a bankable lead. In light of that and reported poor test screenings, A24 also changed the original title of Huntington. Neither title is very good, honestly. That said, I still hold out hope as the first official trailer has dropped, and it’s pretty cool.
Following the release of yesterday’s image featuring Glen Powell notching a bow and arrow, the first trailer for How to Make a Killing has arrived. The film is said to be loosely inspired by Robert Hamer‘s 1949 British crime movie Kind Hearts & Coronets that starred the great Alex Guinness in eight separate roles.
Powell stars as a man disowned at birth by his wealthy family, and so he sets out to reclaim his inheritance, no matter how many relatives stand in the way.
Ford’s screenplay emerged on the Black List way back in 2014, and at one point was nearly turned into a movie starring Mel Gibson and directed by Jon S. Baird.
Also in the cast are Margaret Qualley, Jessica Henwick, Bill Camp, Zach Woods, Topher Grace, and Ed Harris.
This looks like a more welcoming effort by Powell than The Running Man was. It shows his charm and humor, both his biggest strengths by far. Ford is definitely leaning into a more humorous angle than the original movie, which is probably a good idea. Too bad they didn’t have Powell also play eight different characters. That would’ve been a lot of fun.
How to Make a Killing hits theaters on February 20th 2026.
