Will Arnett is primarily known for his comedic roles, in particular on the beloved sitcom Arrested Development. He’s probably not the first actor we think of for taking on a major dramatic performance, but that’s going to change once people see him in Is This Thing On?, the latest film directed by Bradley Cooper. It’s a watershed role for Arnett, who also co-wrote the screenplay, and reveals a depth of feeling he’s never had to show on screen before.
The film is based on the real-life experiences of British comedian John Bishop, who serves as an exec-producer. Will Arnett stars as Alex, who is adrift after separating from his wife Tess, played by Laura Dern. To cope, Alex finds a new passion in stand-up comedy, learning more about himself and his relationship than he thought possible.
Cooper takes on multiple roles, serving as director, co-star, producer, and co-writer along with Arnett and Mark Chappell. The deep ensemble includes Andra Day, Ciaran Hinds, Amy Sedaris, Sean Hayes, Chloe Radcliffe, and Peyton Manning.
Arnett’s preparation for the role saw him doing live sets as Alex at comedy clubs multiple nights a week for six weeks.
Cortland raved about the film in her early review from Middleburg, and having seen it myself, I can 100% back her up. Look out for my interview with Arnett and Dern, as well.
Searchlight Pictures will release Is This Thing On? in theaters on December 19th.
