I’m going to take this one with a grain of salt, but there’s reason for optimism that it’s true. A couple of years ago, we learned that Chris Hemsworth was attached to a new GI Joe/Transformers movie from Paramount Pictures and Hasbro. It’s been a while, but now Nexus Point News is reporting that Hemsworth is out, and he’s been replaced by Bradley Cooper, in a surprising move.
The project is now just a GI Joe movie, with a screenplay by Danny McBride. Still no word on who will be directing, but that info should come out soon.
No word as to why Hemsworth dropped out, but it’s already got some speculating about a new Thor movie. It could be related to other Marvel work, or completely different.
Cooper might seem like a weird choice, but he’s played military figures before, including in the blockbuster American Sniper. He and McBride are also old mates, having worked together in the Cameron Crowe comedy, Aloha, and briefly in McBride’s HBO series, The Righteous Gemstones.
In recent years, Cooper has focused on his work behind the camera. He is currently at work on the Ocean’s Eleven prequel that he’ll direct and star in alongside Margot Robbie. Cooper will also have a role in Sean Penn’s upcoming movie about January 6th, but that won’t shoot for a while yet.
As for which GI Joe character Cooper will play? Duke is expected to be the centerpiece, so that would make some sense. However, I think he’d make a better Chuckles than anyone else.
