Quentin Tarantino used to act quite a lot in the early part of his career, not so much recently, but usually pops up for a moment or two in his own movies. It might be a surprise to learn that he’s just completed work on his most significant role in years, in Jamie Adams’ upcoming drama Only What We Carry, which just finished shooting in France. This would be Tarantino’s most significant role since Robert Rodriguez’s vampire flick From Dusk till Dawn in 1996.
Deadline reports on the Tarantino’s role in Only What We Carry, alongside Simon Pegg, Sofia Boutella, Charlotte Gainsbourg, French actor Liam Hellmann (Ibiza) and singer Lizzy McAlpine in her feature debut.
Writer/director Adams’ credits include She is Love (review), Wild Honey Pie! and Songbird.
Only What We Carry is described as “a meditation on love, loss, and the quiet courage it takes to move forward”, set against the windswept coast of Normany. Here’s a description of the characters, taken from the report:
Pegg plays Julian Johns, “a once-formidable instructor whose former student Charlotte Levant (Boutella) returns home to face the ghosts of her past. Joining them are John Percy (Tarantino), Julian’s old friend whose sudden arrival stirs long-buried truths; Josephine Chabrol (Gainsbourg), Charlotte’s protective sister; Vincent (Hellmann), a restless artist caught between love and loyalty, and Jacqueline (McAlpine), a young aspiring dancer whose presence forces everyone to confront the weight of what they’ve left behind.”
There are a lot of Star Trek connections in this cast, starting with Pegg and Boutella who starred in Star Trek Beyond together. Plus, Tarantino was hired to write an R-rated Star Trek movie with Mark L. Smith that would’ve included Pegg, who had some nice things to say about the shelved project.
It’s unclear when or if Only What We Carry will make its way stateside, but with that cast there’s a good chance we’ll see it sooner than later.
