James Gunn has been teasing for months the next film in what he’s calling the “Superman Saga”, saying that it won’t be a direct sequel to Superman. Today, he’s announced the next movie is Man of Tomorrow and it will open in theaters on July 9th 2027.
Interestingly, the announcement came with a series of images featuring Superman and his archnemesis, Lex Luthor. The first, drawn by Chief Creative Officer of DC Comics Jim Lee (and the greatest comics penciler ever, IMHO), shows Lex in his anti-Superman power suit. Not that Supes appears bothered, as he leans onto the suit holding a screwdriver. What’s that supposed to mean? Will they be building something together? The future, maybe?
A second image was revealed by Superman himself, David Corenswet, and it was drawn by artist Jorge Jiménez. It again shows Superman and Lex Luthor appearing to be shoulder-to-shoulder against a common foe.
Finally, Nicholas Hoult teased another image drawn by Mitch Gerads that shows Superman and Lex in a pitched battle. So who knows what the heck these are supposed to mean?
There isn’t much else that we know other than Corenswet and Hoult reprising their roles. Superman is the most successful superhero movie of the year with over $600M worldwide, and it’s spawned a bunch of popular characters. Fans will undoubtedly hope to see more of Krypto and the Justice Gang. But Gunn saying this won’t be a direct sequel suggests a crossover and possible team-up. Hopefully we’ll learn more about Man of Tomorrow soon.
