28 Years Later was a huge hit when it was released back in June, easily the biggest of the two-decade-old franchise. So there’s not much incentive to sit around and wait to drop the trailer for the anticipated sequel, Nia DaCosta’s 28 Years Later: The Bone Temple, which also isn’t very far away as it opens next January.
The sequel shifts its focus to Alfie Williams’ character, Spike, as he ventures out into the Rage Virus-infected world alone. As we saw at the conclusion of the previous film, he’ll encounter the villainous cult leader Sir Jimmy Crystal, played by Sinners actor Jack O’Connell, and also the eccentric Dr. Ian Kelson, played once again by Ralph Fiennes.
Erin Kellyman, Chi Lewis-Parry, Aaron Taylor-Johnson, Emma Laird, and Cillian Murphy round out the cast. Alex Garland once again penned the screenplay, with Danny Boyle producing.
SYNOPSIS: Expanding upon the world created by Danny Boyle and Alex Garland in 28 Years Later – but turning that world on its head – Nia DaCosta directs 28 Years Later: The Bone Temple. In a continuation of the epic story, Dr. Kelson (Ralph Fiennes) finds himself in a shocking new relationship – with consequences that could change the world as they know it – and Spike’s (Alfie Williams) encounter with Jimmy Crystal (Jack O’Connell) becomes a nightmare he can’t escape. In the world of The Bone Temple, the infected are no longer the greatest threat to survival – the inhumanity of the survivors can be stranger and more terrifying.
28 Years Later: The Bone Temple hits theaters January 16th 2026.
