Once rumored for Star Wars: The Force Awakens, and nearly cast in The Rise of Skywalker, Matt Smith has still found his way to a galaxy far far away. Deadline reports the former Doctor Who has landed a role in Shawn Levy’s Star Wars: Starfighter. And naturally, he’s being called upon to play a villain because that’s what he’s been good at for a while now.
Smith will play the main villain in the next major Star Wars movie from Lucasfilm, following Jon Favreau’s The Mandalorian & Grogu. He joins the previously cast Ryan Gosling and Mia Goth in the film set five years after the events of The Rise of Skywalker.
Jonathan Tropper, writer of Levy’s The Adam Project and This is Where I Leave You, is penning the screenplay.
Coming up for Smith is Darren Aronofsky’s crime movie Caught Stealing opposite Austin Butler. He recently was seen in the second season of HBO’s hit Game of Thrones spinoff, House of the Dragon.
Filming on Star Wars: Starfighter begins this fall, with a May 28th 2027 release date planned.
