The mystery behind the creator, or creators, of Bitcoin is perfect for a conspiracy thriller. And we are going to get one with Killing Satoshi, the next project from director Doug Liman since he won’t be doing a sequel to Road House. Variety reports that Casey Affleck and Pete Davidson will star in the film.
Killing Satoshi centers on the shadowy group who want to keep the real identity of Satoshi Nakamoto, creator of Bitcoin, a secret. See, Satoshi Nakamoto is just a cover for the real person or persons behind the digital currency’s creation in 2009. The identity remains unknown, and Nakamoto’s wallet contains over 1 million Bitcoin with a net worth of $135 as of last month. That fortune remains untouched since 2010, leading many to speculate whether Nakamoto ever truly existed.
The film will have a screenplay by Nick Schenk, writer on Clint Eastwood films Gran Torino, Cry Macho, and The Mule. Aboard as producer is Relativity Media’s Ryan Kavanaugh, his first major production since the company filed bankruptcy in 2015. If you look at the list of duds Relativity was behind, you’ll remember why they did.
In the years since, Kavanagh has gotten heavily into Bitcoin, but he wants you to know this film is about more than that. He said in a statement…
“This is not just a movie about Bitcoin and its elusive and mysterious origins but really about what it stands for. We look at this film much the same way as we did with “The Social Network” and its examination of Facebook. This should equally be a look into the world of what Bitcoin really is.”
This is a reunion of Liman and Affleck who worked together on Apple’s The Instigators in 2024. Coming up next for Liman is the underwater thriller Deeper with Tom Cruise and Ana de armas. He also recently signed on to direct a new adaptation of Stephen King’s The Stand.
Killing Satoshi is expected to arrive next year.
