‘Ink’: Danny Boyle To Direct Rupert Murdoch Biopic Starring Guy Pearce And Jack O’Connell

Fresh off the success of 28 Years Later, Danny Boyle is moving forward on a completely different movie about a walking fungal disaster: Rupert Murdoch. Boyle will direct Ink, a biopic on the 94-year-old Australian media mogul, NewsCorp founder, and creator of Fox News.

Deadline reports Guy Pearce is in talks to star in Ink as Murdoch, with Sinners actor Jack O’Connell as Larry Lamb, the man he appointed as editor of The Sun when he purchased it in 1969. The film is described as “an explosive cinematic rollercoaster” about Murdoch’s vision for a new kind of news that gives the public what they want, and in the process reshapes the media landscape. That means turning the struggles of The Sun around and engaging in a feud with rival British tabloid, The Mirror.

The film is based on James Graham’s stage play, with Graham penning the adaptation himself.

Murdoch has long been a controversial figure. His various outlets, which include the Wall Street Journal and New York Post, straddle the line between fact-based reporting and politically biased opinion. That has led to some trouble, such as Fox News being forced to pay $787M to Dominion Voting Systems for the lies it spread to viewers about the 2020 Presidential election. Brian Cox’s character, Logan Roy in HBO series Succession is said to have been based on Murdoch.

Filming on Ink should kick off in October, meaning it could arrive in 2026 ahead of awards season.
