Orlando Bloom isn’t the first actor we’d think of to lace up the gloves and play a boxer, but in the psychological thriller The Cut, he more than looks ready to dish out some punishment. The film from director Sean Ellis (Anthropoid, The Cursed) stars Bloom alongside Belfast‘s Caitríona Balfe and John Turturro as a brutal trainer who makes Mickey from the Rocky movies look like a lightweight.
The Cut stars Bloom as a boxer who comes out of retirement for a shot at redemption. But with only a few days to make weight, he undergoes a brutal regimen from a trainer known for his extreme methods.
The film has a script by Justin Bull, based on a story by Mark Lane. This is clearly a project that means a lot to Bloom. Not only is he giving of himself to a physically demanding role, but he’s added his name as a producer.
Synopsis: After a career-ending defeat, a former champion trains for redemption – but as obsession takes hold and reality unravels, he may be spiraling into something far more terrifying.
The Cut opens in UK and Irish cinemas on September 5th, exactly one year after its world premiere at TIFF. Hopefully, we’ll have a U.S. date soon.
