While it may seem like the Crawleys and the estate staff at Downton Abbey are frozen in amber, the times they are a changin’, even for them. The hugely successful TV series sparked two hit movies, as well, and now the historical drama comes to a conclusion with Downton Abbey: The Grand Finale.
Once again directed by Simon Curtis and penned by show creator Julian Fellowes, Downton Abbey: The Grand Finale finds the Crawleys and their loyal staff entering the 1930s, with new questions about how to proceed into an uncertain future. The question of how to manage the estate as the world grows more modern seems to have finally come to a head and there will need to be an answer.
Pretty much everyone from the TV series and the previous movies returns, while there have been a few new additions. Simon Russell Beale, Hugh Bonneville, Laura Carmichael, Jim Carter, Raquel Cassidy, Brendan Coyle, Michelle Dockery, Kevin Doyle, Michael Fox, Joanne Froggatt, Paul Giamatti, Harry Hadden-Paton, Robert James-Collier, Allen Leech, Phyllis Logan, Elizabeth McGovern, Sophie McShera, Lesley Nicol, Alessandro Nivola, Dominic West, Penelope Wilton, Arty Froushan, Joely Richardson, Paul Copley, and Douglas Reith star.
Sadly missing is the late Maggie Smith, but the presence of her towering character, Violet Crawley, looms large.
SYNOPSIS: ‘Downton Abbey: The Grand Finale,’ the cinematic return of the global phenomenon, follows the Crawley family and their staff as they enter the 1930s. As the beloved cast of characters navigates how to lead Downton Abbey into the future, they must embrace change and welcome a new chapter.
I’m pretty excited for to see how this wraps up the trilogy. I’ve never seen an episode of the show but have really enjoyed the movies. Is that weird?
Downton Abbey: The Grand Finale opens in theaters on September 12th from Focus Features.
