There have been multiple adaptations and reimaginings of Mary Shelley’s Frankenstein over the decades, with more than a few over the last two years. Is there anything new that can be done with it? Well, if anybody can find a fresh angle, it’s Guillermo Del Toro whose version of Frankenstein was unveiled yesterday at Netflix’s Tudum event, which was not invited to and am bitter about. Don’t mind me.
Del Toro was on hand to introduce the teaser, and of course he was. This is a project he has been wanting to make since the beginning of his career, and has spoken about often. He said at the event…
“This film has been on my mind since I was a child, for fifty years. I’ve been trying to make it for 20 to 25 years. In fact, some people may even think I am a little bit obsessed with ‘Frankenstein’… and they probably would be right. You see, over the decades, the character has fused with my soul in a way that it has become an autobiography. It doesn’t get more personal than this.”
Acting as writer, director, and producer, Del Toro creates a gorgeous sci-fi gothic homage to Shelley’s original novel, but also the 1931 movie and the sequel, Bride of Frankenstein.
The cast is also die for, led by Oscar Isaac, Jacob Elordi, Mia Goth, Lars Mikkelsen, David Bradley, Christian Convery, Charles Dance, Christoph Waltz, and Felix Kammerer.
Isaac plays Victor Frankenstein, with Elordi as his monster, Mia Goth as Elizabeth, and Waltz as Dr. Pretorious who sets out to find the monster believed to have died 40 years earlier.
Frankenstein hits Netflix this November. After winning a Best Animated Feature Academy Award for Pinocchio, Del Toro has truly found a home with the streamer.
