- Thunderbolts* (Review)- $76M
Strong reviews, with many (including me) saying Thunderbolts* recalls the best of Marvel’s early years, were enough to push the antihero team film to #1 with $76M domestically. That’s a bit below expectations, but I would say to withhold judgment for now. The film has been met with positive reviews from critics with 88% on RT and audiences a 94% rating, so there’s potential for a long, successful run. I would point to the poorly-reviewed Captain America: Brand New World, which opened with $88M but concluding its global run with $414M. Worldwide, Thunderbolts* has $162M which is a pretty good start.
2. Sinners– $33M/$179.7M
Ryan Coogler and Michael B. Jordan’s vampire film Sinners continues its solid streak into weak two, falling just 28% and pulling $33M. Domestically, the film has $179M, while worldwide its up to $236M.
3. A Minecraft Movie– $13.7M/$398.2M
After five weeks, A Minecraft Movie keeps chugging along and has $873M globally.
4. The Accountant 2- $9.4M/$41.1M
5. Until Dawn– $3.8M/$14.3M
6. The Amateur– $1.8M/$36.9M
7. The King of Kings– $1.6M/$57.6M
8. Warfare– $1.2M/$24M
9. HIT: The 3rd Case– $955K
10 Guru Nanak Jahaz-$685K
Also…The Surfer (review) was released by Roadside Attractions and Lionsgate into just over 1000 theaters for $674K. The unusual Nicolas Cage thriller saw him play an Australian man returned home to surf, only to be met by violent locals. It received good reviews from critics (86% on RT) but audiences were less enthusiastic (44%). [BoxOfficeMojo]
