‘Drift’: Andy Muschietti To Direct Sci-Fi Hostage Thriller

Andy Muschietti seems to have found his next project to direct. Deadline reports Muschietti will direct Drift, a sci-fi hostage thriller that Skydance just plunked down $2M to acquire the unpublished short story by Ben Queen & Jason Shuman. Muschietti is best known for It Chapter 1, It Chapter 2, and The Flash.

Drift‘s 38-page short story is described this way: When his estranged son vanishes during a space mission, a once-legendary, now fallen from grace shuttle commander is pulled into a high-stakes hostage exchange in space to get his boy back from captors who are not from Earth. The comp is Gravity meets Arrival.

Muschietti was red-hot after his breakout debut horror, Mama, followed by the two blockbuster It adaptations. However, his career hit the skids after directing The Flash, which resulted in over $200M in losses for WB. It was bad enough that we’re hearing next to nothing about The Brave & the Bold, the film Muschietti is supposed to helm for James Gunn’s DC Studios. Most recently, Muschietti directed the Max It prequel series Welcome to Derry.

So it’s likely that Drift will be next on his agenda unless we suddenly get an update on the future DCU slate.
