Eventually, there’s going to be a Batman in James Gunn’s DCU. Whether that happens while Matt Reeves is doing his own thing with the Dark Knight or after, we don’t know. But a few years ago, Gunn hired Andy Muschietti to direct this film, The Brave and the Bold, which seemed like a good idea at the time. Then The Flash happened, and it lost Warner Bros. more than $150M. Since then, it’s been up in the air whether Muschietti is still Gunn’s pick.
With rumors swirling over the last few months, Muschietti has confirmed to a fan that he is indeed still directing The Brave and the Bold. Not only that, but he says a screenwriter is working on the script and that shooting likely won’t happen until after The Batman Part II, so this is late 2026 or 2027.
I say to take all of this with a grain of salt, of course.
Muschietti is a solid filmmaker, but his best work has been in the realm of horror with Mama, the two IT films, and the IT prequel series Welcome to Derry. The Flash was a massive embarrassment but it could be argued that the fault doesn’t fall on Muschietti. That movie was dead on arrival due to the criminal acts of its star, Ezra Miller.
This story is far from over. The Brave and the Bold will find Batman raising his psychotic son, Damian Wayne, as the new Robin. We’ll see if that storyline holds up, too, because it seems weird to introduce the Caped Crusader as a parent rather than in the way most people recognize him.
