Darren Aronofsky rarely shoots to attract a mainstream crowd, but it seems things have changed. His latest, the crime flick Caught Stealing, looks like a pulse-pounding crowd-pleaser, and fairly faithful to the source material. This version of the filmmaker hasn’t been seen in over a decade, and that is reason enough to be intrigued. The cast, led by Austin Butler, is another.
Butler stars in Caught Stealing, an adaptation of Charlie Huston’s book and penned by the author himself. Butler plays Henry “call me Hank” Thompson, a former baseball player plunged into NYC’s criminal underworld in a wild fight for survival from dangerous folks who want something from him. Pretty good time to have his trust aluminum bat handy.
Also in the cast are Zoe Kravitz, Vincent D’Onofrio, Matt Smith, Liev Schreiber, Regina King, Will Brill, D’Pharaoh Woon-A-Tai, Action Bronson, Carol Kane, George Abud, and Griffin Dunne perhaps due to his connection to Scorsese’s After Hours, an apparent influence on Aronofsky.
SYNOPSIS: Burned-out ex-baseball player Hank Thompson unexpectedly finds himself embroiled in a dangerous struggle for survival amidst the criminal underbelly of 1990s New York City, forced to navigate a treacherous underworld he never imagined.
Caught Stealing opens in theaters on August 29th from Sony Pictures.
