R&B superstar Abel “The Weeknd” Tesfaye made a big splash during the Lionsgate presentation at Cinemacon. He’s starring in the musical psychological thriller, Hurry Up Tomorrow, the first movie in six years from Waves director Trey Edward Shults. The film is Tesfaye’s way of retiring the moniker, with a story based on his sixth studio album.
Directed by Shults from a script he co-wrote with Tesfaye, Hurry Up Tomorrow also stars Jenna Ortega and Barry Keoghan. Tesfaye plays a version of himself, a “musician plagued by insomnia is pulled into an odyssey with a stranger who begins to unravel the very core of his existence.”
We’ll have to see if Tesfaye can get his acting career on the right track. He made a small cameo as himself in Uncut Gems, but his HBO series The Idol was short-lived and was poorly reviewed.
Hurry Up Tomorrow opens in theaters on May 16th.
