Video game creator Hideo Kojima is both lauded and criticized for making games that are more like movies. While a Metal Gear Solid adaptation has been in the works for years, it looks as if his latest game, Death Stranding, will be first to hit the silver screen as A24 has announced its director.
A24 revealed that Michael Sarnoski will write and direct Death Stranding. Sarnoski got his start wit the criticalliy acclaimed Nicolas Cage drama Pig, then successfully jumped to blockbuster franchises with A Quiet Place: Day One.
Kojima likes to cast popular actors for the characters in his games, and Death Stranding is packed with stars. Norman Reedus, Mads Mikkelsen, Léa Seydoux, Margaret Qualley, Nicolas Winding Refn, Guillermo del Toro, Troy Baker, Tommie Earl Jenkins, and Lindsay Wagner all make appearances. Will any of them also show up in the movie? It seems like there’s a pretty good shot of that happening.
The plot of Death Stranding finds you as a courier in a post-apocalyptic America besieged by invisible creatures with a link to the afterlife.
A second game, Death Stranding II: On the Beach, will be released in June and feature Elle Fanning.
I’m not a fan of Death Stranding, finding the game beautiful but tedious. So it’s tough for me to get excited over this. That said, Sarnoski has proven an excellent filmmaker and it’ll be interesting to see which elements from the game he brings to life.
